Folks from all over the world find their way to the historic Fries Theatre for the weekly Thursday night jams. All visitors are welcome to mingle with the local residents who gather for a relaxing evening of old-time music and fellowship. The Fries jams are an affiliated venue on the famous The Crooked Road -Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail. Bring a banjo, dulcimer, guitar, fiddle, or bass, and join in the music circle. And there’s dancing all evening. If you don’t know the traditional two-step waltz, just ask and someone will help. The jams are for all ages.
Doors open every Thursday at 6 p.m. and the music runs from 7 – 9 p.m. During a break, around 8 p.m., there’s a real cake walk and the winner in this jolly tradition takes home a cake or other baked treat.
The jams are free, but donations are gratefully accepted. Refreshments are available.
During summer months there are occasional Friday night dances scheduled, featuring the best local bands. The jams go on year round.

We would like to invite you to these amazing Saturdays at the museum. Once a month we invite our artisans, craftsmen and heritage farmers to the museum to help bring the museum to life. We have been working on this event for the past couple years and agree that it has helped bring the public closer to our amazing heritage here in the Appalachian mountains. These events are free to the public, but we always take donations to keep this a free museum. This year Demonstration Saturdays will be on: June 3, July 15, August 5, September 30

Event Details
Fast Track is a band that formed following the retirement announcement of long time Cardinal Tradition band leader, David Parmley. Three of the four members decided to form the band and sought out to fill the remaining spots, mandolin and guitar, seeking instrumentalists who were also strong vocalists. Wow, did that ever work in their favor.
The five members of Fast Track are not only all highly decorated in awards from the IBMA and SPBGMA organizations, but are also veteran players on the Grand Ole Opry stage, across the United States, Canada, and throughout Europe. Between all of the gentlemen, they have performed with, recorded on and participated in countless projects with bluegrass and country music royalty throughout their most impressive careers.
The Fast Track members are: Dale Perry (banjo, bass vocals), Steve Day (fiddle, vocals), Ron Spears (bass, vocals), Shayne Bartley (mandolin, vocals), and Duane Sparks (guitar, vocals). The band has already successfully released two full-length albums with Engelhardt Music Group out of Nashville, TN, and has completed a third studio recording expected later this year. It truly seems there is just no stopping once you jump on this FAST TRACK!

This event here at the Museum, was started in 2019 and we do hope this becomes a great way to meet your neighbors, maybe make a new friend. This year, ( 2023) our first Jam will be in May and our last one being in September, 2023. Unless our Musicians want to do more Tuesdays together, so watch our calendar to see. We are inviting Musicians, people who love music, people who would love to learn how to play, people who dance and sing, to join us at the Museum at 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. This is a great way to learn about what makes this area so special, plus hear beautiful music. If you want bring a potluck snack or meal to share with everyone. We are providing disposable dishes, cups and silverware this year due to the Pandemic. We want to recreate the feeling of a community social. This is a free event and a fun way to get out and see the Museum. We do hope to see you soon.

Celebrating 75th Anniversary of The Clinch Mountain Boys
2021 marks the 75th Anniversary of The Clinch Mountain Boys, we are excited and pleased to carry on the Clinch Mountain style of music. Ralph II began working professionally for his father in the year of 1995 and has carried The Clinch Mountain Boys on since. As well as fronting the first Clinch Mountain Boys group after the passing of his father Ralph Edmond Stanley.
Grammy Award winning artist Ralph Stanley II & The Clinch Mountain Boys are currently touring in support of their 2019 Stanley Family Records release, the Billboard chart topping ‘Lord Help Me Find The Way.’ This is their second release after dropping a self-titled album in 2017 that was the first release for the group since Ralph II took over the Clinch Mountain Boys band name per the wishes of his late father Dr. Ralph Stanley.

Event Details

Last year this was a great event and this year we plan to grow on this! This is on a Wednesday now. Then almost every Wednesday, after we will have this reading event until August 2, 2023, this will be our last one for the year. Come on out and meet our Museum Manager and our volunteers, as we dress in period clothing and read to your children from books written in the late 19th Century and Early 20th Century. This is an event for all ages who love stories! Please feel free to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the Museum. Reading starts at 11:00 am and the event goes until right around 12:00 am. We will start adding in games and other learning opportunities for your little ones. Best part it is a free event for the Summer. Hope to see you soon.

Event Details

This year Demonstration Saturdays will be on: July 15, August 5, September 30

Event Details

Event Details
For over 30 years, Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out have been touring and releasing great, original bluegrass music. After spending a handful of formative years as a member of Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver (and recording some legendary bluegrass music in the process), Russell Moore formed IIIrd Tyme Out in 1991 and bluegrass music hasn’t been the same since. IIIrd Tyme Out helped usher in a new era of youthful, energetic bluegrass and established a unique sound that has lasted well into the 21st century. Three decades later, Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out are one of bluegrass music’s most-awarded touring bands with over 50 industry accolades to their credit. In 2019, Moore received his 6th Male Vocalist of the Year award from the International Bluegrass Music Association, maintaining the record as their most awarded in that category. With 18 albums and plenty of miles under his belt, Moore is excited about celebrating the band’s 30th Anniversary. “Even with all these years into it we’re just as ready to hit the road and play the music as we were our first day on the road in 1991.”

This year Demonstration Saturdays will be on: August 5, September 30

Event Details

Event Details

Event Details
Event Details
As young boys, Christopher and Taylor Malpass soaked up the music of their granddad’s phonograph records. Christopher earned his first talent show trophy at age 7, and Taylor was playing mandolin by the time he was 10. Today, they promote the work and music of classic country artists they treasure while creating new music and making their own mark in the lineage of a rich American cultural heritage.
With sincerity, honesty and an utter ease on stage that belies their years, their smooth vocal blend and skillful musicianship layer infectiously into the deep respect they pay to legends who have paved the way. Add the funny, off-the-cuff quips between the two 20-something siblings, and the engaging concert becomes a magnetic time-traveling journey to when a calmer rhythm reigned supreme.
The Malpass Brothers toured with the late Don Helms, former steel guitarist for Hank Williams, have opened for music legend Merle Haggard on multiple tours and appeared on stages from the Shetland Islands to Ryman Auditorium to Merlefest. Gifted musicians and songwriters, the brothers have shared billing with artists including Ray Price, Willie Nelson, Doyle Lawson, Rhonda Vincent, Marty Stuart, Doc Watson and more. The title cut video from their “Memory That Bad” album hit CMT Pure Country’s Top Ten. Their most recent self-titled recording, produced by bluegrass legend Doyle Lawson, was released by Crossroads’ Organic Records in 2015.
If you like cornbread & hush puppies, you’re gonna love the Malpass Brothers. If you like sweet tea, barbecue & collards, you’re gonna love the Malpass Brothers. If you like clean fresh air over a freshly-plowed field, if you like a great big ol’ corn puddin’ at a homecoming covered dish, you’re gonna love the Malpass Brothers. That’s a promise. (And you don’t lie about a covered dish supper.)
This is the real deal, folks. There is no pretense. This is music steeped in the legacy of the Louvin Brothers, Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, Hank Williams, Sr. & others. Count on classic, real country. Count on new Malpass tunes. Count on a couple of old-time traditional gospels. Count on their probably coming down into the house at intermission and asking what you’d like to hear. Count on giggles and ribbing between brothers. Count on some big hair and fancy boots and maybe even an Elvis twitch or two. Count on lines at the merch table – and count on logging on to find out where and how soon you’ll be able to see them next!
