The traveling exhibit "Musical Styles Along the Crooked Road" is on display at the Carroll County Public Library during the month of February. This exhibit presents the rich variety of roots music that southwestern Virginians sing and play - fiddle and banjo tunes, bluegrass, ballads of love and death, sentimental mountain songs, blues, and gospel. The exhibit includes rare film footage and photographs of historic Crooked Road musicians.
To celebrate the Musical Styles Along the Crooked Road exhibit, a musical program will be presented at the Carroll County Public Library on Saturday, February 14, 2009, from 12 noon to 1:30pm. Old-time music will be provided by fiddler, Benton Flippen, along with Kevin Fore on banjo, and Trish Fore on guitar. Flippen, age 88, and a 1992 North Carolina Folk Heritage Award winner, plays the fiddle every day and continues to perform nationwide and produce new recordings. Flippen is featured in the current issue of Fiddler Magazine. Kevin Fore has won many awards at area fiddlers' conventions for his Kyle Creed-like style of banjo playing, and also builds handmade banjos. Like her husband, Kevin, Trish Fore has also won many awards at area fiddlers' conventions, enjoys playing for community events, and is interested in talking with people about old-time and bluegrass music. The Crooked Road, Virginia's Heritage Music Trail, is a driving trail through southwest Virginia from Franklin County through the southwest to Lee and Dickenson Counties. There are dozens of sites along the Crooked Road where one can experience the culture, talent, and the friendliness of the people. The trail highlights museums, musicians, and the best sites for hearing live music.
The Carroll County Public Library is open Monday 10am to 8pm; Tuesday through Friday from 10am to 6pm; Saturday 10am to 2pm; closed Sunday. For more information visit the library web page http://galaxcarroll.lib.va.us<http://galaxcarroll.lib.va.us/> or call 728-2228.
